Turning Employees into Leaders in One Business Day

There are thousands of pictures and business quotes across the internet universe that aid in motivating managers to become leaders rather than bosses in the office. Employees themselves are molded from the traditional hierarchy of the workplace, separating defined roles between a boss and their subordinates. It’s important for your staff to feel encouraged to make more informed decisions and to motivate their co-workers to succeed.

Although transitioning your employees into leaders isn’t instantaneous, there are strategies you can take to see a noticeable change in the mindset and motivation of your employees within one business day.

  1. Support communication between departments

    A typical employee in an office may only speak (or know the names of) to a handful of people. We can smile at them in the lunchroom or halls, but there isn’t communication or experiential stories/advice being shared between coworkers. Schedule an hour in the morning, offer coffee and donuts, and have a small networking session where employees are supported to discuss their work with office strangers. Interdepartmental communications build trust and strength within your overall business.

  2. Managers and high-level employees should also become more communicative

    51% of employees have reported that their bosses or superiors refuse to communicate with them. There isn’t much that can promote the feeling of uselessness in an employee than being treated like their role is insignificant to the company. Ensure everyone from the top of the ladder down to the new hires is encouraged to take part in communication activities like suggested above. Everyone, from CEO to Intern, can benefit from building a relationship with others at the company.

  3. Offer experiential learning opportunities to employees who exhibit leadership potential

    I had a boss once who often offered me duties and tasks that were outside of my scope as an entry-level admin clerk. He knew that I had a strong educational background and a thirst to prove myself, so he gently forced me out of my comfort zone to learn new skills. I was promoted within a few months. By providing capable employees with the chance to grow their skills, you acknowledge their importance and individuality - which will motivate them to exceed expectations. It’s important though to communicate the intent here, an employee who simply feels work outside of their role is being dumped on them will have a different feeling here than an employee who sees the vision.

  4. Become a mentor and promote ownership among your team

    Begin scheduling one-on-one meetings with your employees. These meetings shouldn’t be considered a feedback or review session, instead, they should be solely focused on determining your employees’ goals and whether they want to take on more tasks or move up in the company. You can then offer advice or self-experience that can motivate them into taking ownership of their tasks and important studs in the house of business success.
